I was thinking that there has to be a more efficient gas to use so I looked up Zyclon B but that’s the same kind of gas. I wonder if carbon monoxide has ever been used.

I didn’t even notice that! Yes, I copied and pasted so it wasn’t my misspell – but it was, in the sense that I didn’t catch it. It certainly does add to the amusement though.

The old territorial prison in Rawlins, Wyoming has a gas chamber as part of the extensive tour. Fascinating device, just as La Comtesse describes above, and you can sit in the chair if you’d like (great photo op). It’s housed in the same building as the old gallows. Since the gallows was on the second floor (allowing the inmate to fall through to the first floor), the gas chamber was also located on the second floor. Both are immediately adjacent to the death row cells. The tour is highly recommended … this old prison was also the location for the B-movie horror film “Prison” which stars a very young Viggo Mortenson.

I was amused by the mispelling of orderlies. Quote: “oderlies enter the chamber, wearing gas masks and rubber gloves. Their training manual advises them to ruffle the victim’s hair to release any trapped cyanide gas before removing the deceased.”
Now I am sure, Comtesse, this is not YOUR mispell, but I was struck with the giggles when I thought of Oderlies going into a gas chamber.

Wow, what an intensely vivid description. I can’t help but wonder if that first person back in 1924 had any idea that the prison would attempt to gas him in his sleep that night. If you knew it was coming, would you be able to fall asleep?
