Drugs Are Bad, M’kay?
March 2nd, 2009
Amy sent me a link to some videos produced by something called the “Montana Meth Project” whose mission appears to be to stop bored rural teenagers from adding some drama to their tedious lives. They have produced a number of graphic videos with the message “Meth: Not Even Once” because, as we all know, it’s impossible to experiment with drugs without getting sucked into a hollow-eyed, abscess-ridden, blackened tooth, dead-in-a-gutter fate. Anyway, despite the obnoxiousness of the message, some of the videos are well-done and worth a gander, though they get more predictable and dumb as you go along.
Here are some great vids from the above project and other ‘Meth’ psa’s
cheers
Sandy
the link would help! http://www.metacafe.com/tags/meth/
Having lost several friends to meth (two now dead, four just vanished), each of whom just dabbled in the drug to begin with, I have to say I have very mixed feelings about these ads. I don’t like the normative nature of “Not Even Once,” but I do know from watching my friends descend into meth hell how amazingly fast casual meth use turns into a fiendish habit that’s near-impossible to break for a lot of people. Meth is a scourge in the gay community. It would be nice to see some effective ads that deal with the habituation in a reasonable and factual manner.
I’ve seen what meth is doing to families here in Idaho and it’s a mess. I only have one complaint about the ads and that is that not everyone who does meth immediately comes off as a train wreck. This can send kids (and adults alike) the wrong message that they can trust someone as long as they don’t look like the people in these ads, and that’s a very dangerous assumption.
I’ve done Meth in the extreme and I’m still alive and sober. One day I just decided to stop and it turned to another day and so on… I’ve concluded that addiction is mostly a mental aberration. A belief of need based on greed and satisfaction. A post-post-modern societal ill.
Mind you that I’ve also survived cocaine and heroin addiction also, but that was way before meth and I also stopped the same way.
I’ve also lost friends and maybe I shouldn’t be here to write these words…
