Morbid Horticulture!

Here’s an excellent article on that wonder of morbid evolution: the carrion flower. These flowers have evolved to replicate the stench of rotting flesh in order to attract flies and carrion beetles (which serve as unwitting pollinators). Wayne’s Word has an excellent article about the flowers, complete with photographs:

Back in July 2004, the Amorphophallus Titanum (Giant Corpse Flower) at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas was getting ready to bloom, so of course I grabbed the kids and went to check it out. It wasn’t blooming yet, but it was huge. My oldest daughter is going to SFA as a freshman this year. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.
