I don’t know which is scarier

I just watched the show. It’s sick what that poor woman has been through, and it was all because of anothe rperson’s irresponsibility and selfishness.
You know what else bothered me? Oprah made a big deal about Ms. Nash revealing her damaged face for hte first time on her (Oprah’s) show, mentioning more than once that the tabloids have been after the pictures for some time. Well I wo8uld like to know what makes Oprah so much less predatory than the tabloids. She may be more polite and compassionate, and she certainly offered more money, but when you get right down to it, she’s as much a publicity and money hound as the next guy.

I’m glad to see her doing the best she can for herself. If Oprah is offering the funds, take them. I’m sure she desperately needs them, and at least Oprah handles situations with what I’m sure is much more dignity than the tabloid headhunters.

This is such a horrible thing, but seeing it, for me anyway, made me really understand it. Before I saw, I knew it was awful, but I really didn’t realize the extent.

I don’t see how keeping things secret helps anyone. Maybe actually seeing this can put it in perspective for more people, from people wanting to donate and help, to people now second-guessing their wild animal purchase.

That having been said, I realize there are people who will be adversely affected by seeing her. To them I say, don’t look. She’s obviously chosen this as her time to reveal, and that’s all that matters.

To be fair, Charla acted irresponsibly in this situation, too. This wasn’t the first time Charla met Travis, she had repeatedly been to that house and had contact with the chimp. Yes, the owner was a selfish jerk for having the animal as a pet, but if I knew a friend owned a 200lb chimp that lived in her house, I would never go to the house in the first place. It doesn’t take away from her suffering or her bravery for appearing on tv or my sympathy for her and her family, but it’s not like she was randomly attacked in a park while playing frisbee. She chose to go to that house again and again, knowing there was a wild animal living there who was not always caged. She didn’t deserve it but she had some responsibility in it occurring.

Luckily for all you Oprah haters out there, she says her last show will be in September 2011. Suspiciously long notice; maybe she hopes to ahve her fans beg her to stay on and she will then be magnanimous and fan-centered and “accede to public demand?” Who knows?
My mother remembers watchign Oprah co-anchor the morning news out of Baltimore waaaay back, whe I was onlya toddler. I bet neither my mother nor Oprah ever expected then that thirty-some years later, Oprah would be sucha powerful media figure, or that her word could make or brea something as important as an election.

That is interesting, I wonder why she did give such a long notice.

The bigger the buildup, the bigger her audience will be come Final Episode Day. That’s my guess, if she isn’t hoping to do the “See, I’ve listened to my fans and by popular demand, I’m still here!”

Very good point. That way she’s the ‘good guy’ no matter what she does. I guess that’s marketing.
