Wretched Recommendations!

December 19th, 2009

Jessie has a book recommendation for us:

Gangs Of New York
by Herbert Ashbury

Gangs Of New York“And no, not the movie, which is okay. But the book by Herbert Ashbury, which I came across by way of The Gangs of the French Quarter. As a good New Orleanian, I have that book on my wishlist, and maybe Santa Claws will bring it. But I picked up New York at a library sale.

“I’m 35 pages into this book and have come across two passages that made me raise an eyebrow, and I gather it promises much, MUCH more. It’s very poorly cited, he just lists some papers and shit. Not MLA standard, but this was a book put out in 1927. Anyway, enough teasing, onto the two passages that made me sit down and email you.

“In talking about the Old Brewery in Five Points, which became a tenement:

‘Most of the cellar compartments were occupied by Negroes, many of whom had white wives. In these dens were born children who lived into their teens without seeing the sun or breathing fresh air, for it was dangerous for a resident of the Old Brewery to leave his niche as it was for an outsider to enter the building. In one basement room of about fifteen feet square, not ten years before the Civil War, twenty-six people lived in the most frightful misery and squalor. Once when a murder was committed in this chamber (a little girl who had been stabbed to death after she had been so foolish as to show a penny she had begged) the body lay in a corner for five days before it was finally buried in a shallow grave dug in the floor by the child’s mother. In an 1850 an investigation found that no person of the twenty-six had been outside of the room for more than a week, except to lie in wait at the doorway for a more fortunate denizen to pass along with food.’

“Later, the Old Brewery is being wrecked in order to make spiffy new Christian work houses by the Missionary Society:

‘The laborers who wrecked the Old Brewery carried out several sacks filled with human bones they had found between the walls in the cellars, and night after night gangsters thronged the ruin searching for the treasure which rumor had it was buried there.’

“They don’t say how big the sacks were. Slovenly reporting, obviously.

“Hopefully you’ll like this one. If I come across more horrible things I’ll send them on. Enjoy!”

Morbid Fact Du Jour For December 17, 2009

Today’s Mixed-Up Yet Truly Morbid Fact!

Employees of a Pennsylvania pet store expecting a shipment of tropical fish and salt water got a man’s dead body instead. Mark Arabia owns the Pets Plus store in northeast Philadelphia, where the mix-up was discovered. He says he learned the body was that of a 65-year-old San Diego-area man who died of early onset Alzheimer’s disease. The body was supposed to go to a research laboratory in Allentown, a 70-mile drive away. US Airways Inc. released a statement saying the air cargo problem was caused by a “verbal miscommunication between a delivery driver and the cargo representative.” The Tempe, Ariz.-based airline says it’s deeply sorry. The fish were shipped in three boxes. The corpse was shipped in a wooden coffin wrapped in cardboard. Arabia says the fish were left at the airport and probably died.

Morbid Fact Du Jour For December 16, 2009

Today’s Blood-Soaked Yet Truly Morbid Fact!

Despairing David Phyall cut off his head with a chainsaw after losing an eviction fight. David, 58, plugged it into the mains and put a timer on the socket, then took a cocktail of pills to knock himself out. He rested the saw on his neck and once he passed out, the timer went off – slicing through his neck in an instant. Cops and paramedics found his blood-soaked corpse (in July, 2008) after his dad John raised the alarm. A Hampshire police source said: “What greeted them was a horrific sight. The head was severed and there was a considerable amount of blood. He seemed to have gone into a great amount of detail to end it all.” The campaigner had fought for several years to prevent developers bulldozing the block of 72 flats he rented in, and replacing them. He was last to leave after all the other flats were boarded up in Bishopstoke, Southampton. It is believed an eviction notice from housing association Atlantic Housing Ltd was the last straw. A spokesman for Atlantic said: “We had given him 11 other offers of accommodation but he rejected them, basically because he did not want a property owned by us.” An inquest into the death was opened at Winchester Coroner’s Court and adjourned. Ron Turtle, residents’ association chairman, said: “They offered him several places that were similar but he just didn’t want to move. They had to go to court. It is a very sad situation.” The flats were built in the 1960s but would cost more to repair than the £7.8million cost of rebuilding on the site.

Clever fellow! Some of us would just be satisfied with taking the pills, but he had a back-up plan.

Morbid Trinket Du Jour!

December 16th, 2009

Okay, now HERE is the perfect jewelry for the person who stops to admire roadkill in your life: Loved To Death. They make lovely broaches out of prairie dog paws, parrot head necklaces, bat wing and skull necklaces, human tooth pendants, and the like. And they are really quite lovely too! (And to my relief, they guarantee that no animal was killed for their work.)
