I'm sure there were countless more "evacuations" from the dysentery. Man, having that at 10,000+ feet would just suck.

Is this the book about the five (six?) young guys who died in an avalanche in Montana? If so I read that a few years ago. Good book.

oddly enough, there was a child actor on a couple of PBS kiddie shows, like Ghostwriter, I think, and his name was Sheldon Turnipseed. Spelled like that. A black kid, I think, this was back in the late eighties or early nineties.
Now why have I retained that useless bit of trivia all this time?

But, if you drown or nearly drown, you stand a better chance of them being able to resuscitate you if you've been in very cold water, because the cold water slows your metabolism so much that you don't need as much oxygen in your brain.

There is something so earnest and stately about the spaces, but the photos capture a reticent - even accusatory - air in the purpose-built rooms whose purposes have been abandoned.

Better to travel them by picture, perhaps, but well worth the visit.

Can't remember where I read it-- possibly on this very site!-- but apparently for some kinds of junkies, the warning that This Stuff May Kill You simply adds to the attraction.

Yeah, a very good book, despite a few boring passages.
Shall we hum "Smoke on the Water" or "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" now?

She had bacterial meningitis. We believe that she got it as a secondary infection from the flu. The bacteria was introduce by a popcorn kernel that she had stuck in her ear. Doctors treating her for the obstruction in the ear, didn't catch the menigitis syptoms. She was not yet 2 yrs.
The popcorn kernel was her 4th time of shoving things in her ears (popcorn kernel, bead, button). She had also stuffed a handkerchief up her nose, fortunately a silk one. I'm so glad the only thing my boys did resulted in split lips and skinned knees.
